The lamps in UV filter systems can give off light for 9,000 to 11,000 hours. This germicidal UV light kills off bacteria and viruses in your water effectively. The UV lamp may emit a bluish light signalling its end. This bluish light is not enough to kill any bacteria in the water. Instead, it signals the need to change the UV lamp. If you ignore it, the UV lamp will eventually burn out, and the filaments will break. When this happens, your UV lamp may not light up anymore.
The good news is water ballasts come with an alarm that lets you know when it has stopped giving power to your filter system's UV lamp. Either your UV lamp has burnt off, or the ballast is damaged. When this happens, the alarm will go off.
When safeguarding your UV lamps, we recommend proper and regular maintenance. Water ballasts may become damaged when UV lamps experience frequent power outages and odd frequencies. You can plug a ballast into a dedicated outlet and use a surge protector to protect it from power-related damage.
It's also important to ask yourself when you last changed your UV lamp. If it is only a few months old, a damaged ballast is the likely culprit. If the lamp is older than a year, a UV lamp replacement is ideal.
