The Hydronix ICF-10Q coconut shell GAC filter sits inline on the cold water supply line feeding the fridge. It reduces chlorine taste and odour, sediment to 5 microns, and other compounds that affect the flavour of drinking water and ice. The 1/4" quick-connect fittings make installation and annual filter swaps straightforward without tools.

Where to Use This Kit

This fridge filter connection kit suits any fridge or refrigerator with a plumbed water and ice maker line that runs on a standard 1/4" supply. It is commonly used in two situations:

Replacing an expensive internal fridge filter: Many fridge manufacturers charge a premium for branded internal filter replacements. This external kit routes the supply line through an inline GAC filter before it enters the fridge, so the internal filter slot can be bypassed with a bypass plug (not included, check fridge compatibility). At the same time, filtration happens externally at a lower annual cost.

Adding filtration to a fridge with no built-in filter: If your fridge draws directly from the mains supply without any filtration, this kit adds a first stage of carbon filtration to improve the taste and odour of dispensed water and ice.

Installation Overview

  1. Turn off the cold water supply to the fridge at the isolation valve or mains.

  2. Disconnect the existing 1/4" supply line from the fridge inlet.

  3. Use the included polyethylene tubing and quick-connect fittings to route the supply line through the ICF-10Q filter. Water flows in one end and out the other into the fridge.

  4. Mount the filter using the included bracket in a fixed position behind or beside the fridge, or inside a cabinet.

  5. Turn the water supply back on, check all connections for leaks, and run two to three litres of water through the filter before drinking to flush the carbon media.

The 5m tubing is sufficient for most installations. The quick-connect fittings require no tools and accept standard 1/4" polyethylene and copper tubing.

Maintenance

Replace the ICF-10Q filter annually or at 2,000 gallons (approximately 7,570 litres) of throughput, whichever comes first. The quick-connect fittings allow the filter to be swapped out in minutes without tools or shutting off the main water supply, provided an isolation valve is fitted on the supply line. Replacement ICF-10Q filters are available separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this kit work with my fridge?

It suits any fridge with a plumbed 1/4" water supply line. If you are unsure of your fridge's connection size, check the inlet fitting at the back of the appliance or refer to your fridge manual.

Do I need a plumber to install this?

Not necessarily. The quick-connect fittings are tool-free, and the installation involves only cutting and inserting tubing. A confident DIYer can install it. If you are not comfortable working with plumbing connections, a plumber can fit it quickly.

Does this replace my fridge's internal filter?

It can, but your fridge will need a bypass plug in the internal filter slot to prevent unfiltered water from bypassing the housing. Bypass plugs are fridge-specific and not included in this kit. Filtration is then handled externally by the ICF-10Q inline filter.

How often do I replace the inline filter?

Once a year or at 2,000 gallons (approximately 7,570 litres), whichever comes first. Replacement ICF-10Q filters are available separately.

What does the GAC filter actually remove? 

The coconut shell GAC media reduces chlorine taste and odour, fine sediment to 5 microns, and other compounds affecting water taste. It is not designed to remove heavy metals, nitrates, bacteria, or dissolved salts. If those contaminants are a concern, a more comprehensive under-bench or reverse osmosis system would be more appropriate.

Pro Tip

Fit an inline isolation valve on the supply line upstream of the filter before installation. It costs very little and means future filter replacements can be done without turning off the water supply to the whole kitchen. It also makes it easy to isolate the fridge line quickly if a fitting ever needs attention.
